The original N12 specification for monitoring conditions in Nordic broadcast control rooms required that monitoring loudspeakers frequency response shall be measured at the engineer’s position in the listening room. Genelec’s answer and solution since 1978 is to feature frequency response adjustments via DIP-switches in all its loudspeakers. Improving the loudspeaker-room interaction is probably the area where the most audible improvements are now achieved by using powerful DSP and automated system calibration. Genelec’s Christophe Anet explains the company’s take on AutoCal.

A monitoring system should reproduce sound without adding or taking anything away from the original input signal. The human hearing features a phenomenon called auditory masking, and modern recording systems have a flat electronic frequency response. To accurately monitor what is recorded, mixed-down or broadcasted, the monitoring system must also have a flat response at the listening position. However, monitors are built in anechoic conditions, and their response changes when placed into a listening room because of room boundary loading, reflections, reverberation time characteristics, etc. Christophe Anet details in this article the various monitor’s response adjustments needed for optimal loudspeaker-room interaction and flat frequency response at the listening position.

The way loudspeakers interact with a room defines the quality and precision of reproduction in that room and, as a consequence, determines the resulting quality of the production process. Issues like loudspeaker placement in relation to boundaries, furniture design and layout, room shape and acoustic treatment should all be carefully considered before a monitoring system is set up. Then, the question is - which kind of anomalies should be corrected and which should not? The most important benefit of a well designed DSP-based monitoring system is clearly the possibility for an automated calibration system to fully align a set of loudspeakers. The launch of the Genelec's 8000 series monitors led to the creation of a new product category in the company's already wide range. A need was also identified for a small-sized monitoring system that could be adopted in a wide range of applications, including broadcast and post-production studios, distributed audio installations and audio/video workstations. The R&D experience gained in the development of the 8030A, 8040A and 8050A provided unique technical solutions to create the new 8020A monitor. Genelec's Christophe Anet says the challenge was to combine small physical size and defined outer aesthetics together with outstanding technical performance and excellent functionality.
