POW! PIX specializes in the rapid turn-around of high-quality long-form episodic television programming and broadcast specials. The company began with a single AVID video editing system and now has 14 systems providing SD and HD post production for a wide variety of clients. “The Genelec DSP Series monitoring system was the perfect solution for what we wanted to do, which was expand our audio capabilities further into the realm of high definition,” explains Bob Barzyk, President of POW! PIX. “We’re getting increasing amounts of HD work and we have to meet the demands of HD with the audio, as well.”
The first advantage the Genelec DSP Active Monitors provided for POW! PIX was the ability to create multiple listening positions within the same control room. Because the monitors and subwoofer employ the company’s proprietary DSP (Digital Signal Processing), GLM™ (Genelec Loudspeaker Manager™ software) and AutoCal™ (Automated Calibration software) technologies, Barzyk was able to create multiple sweet spots within his new mix suite. “That’s incredibly useful,” he says. “What I have is a sweet spot specifically for my mix position, and one that’s tailored to the acoustics at the producer’s desk, which is on a raised platform at the rear of the room. It’s amazing how much the sound can vary in the eight feet that separates these areas, but the Genelec DSP monitors are able to perfectly compensate and ‘tune’ themselves for each listening position. The producers notice the difference and appreciate being able to have the monitoring environment tailored to their specific needs.” Barzyk can also set up numerous mix environments within the DSP’s software, view them graphically, and save them as presets. “The software makes it very easy to do all of this,” he says. “And of course the monitors just sound great.”
About the Genelec DSP SeriesThe DSP Series is comprised of two Bi-amplified Active Monitors. The 8240A utilizes a 6.5-inch woofer and 3/4-inch tweeter set into Genelec’s Advanced Directivity Controlled Waveguide™ (DCW™). The free-field frequency response is 48 Hz to 20 kHz (±1.0 db). Peak SPL per pair is 115 dB driven by a pair of 90 Watt amplifiers for each driver. The 8250A has an 8-inch woofer and 1-inch tweeter set into the DCW with a free-field frequency response of 38 Hz to 20 kHz (±1.0 db). Peak SPL per pair is 120 dB driven by 150 Watt LF, and 120 Watt HF amplifiers. Both models are fully compatible with the GLM and proprietary Genelec loudspeaker control network, as well as the 7260A, 7270A and 7271A Active Subwoofers, and can also be used independently of the network. All drivers are magnetically shielded.
The GLM Installation Package includes AutoCal microphone with holder, USB cable, microphone cable, Control Network Interface, GLM System Operating Manual, and GLM software disc for both PC and Mac. A GLM Expansion Package is also available, offering the capability to install GLM in additional rooms within a facility.
