Laura Daly’s Shadowland Wins ‘Engine Room’ Sound Art Prize

Genelec was proud to be a sponsor this year of the annual Engine Room International Sound Art Exhibition, which is the brainchild of Morley College London and continues Morley’s legacy as a leading centre for experimental music and sound art.

The Engine Room celebrates the most exciting sound art being produced right now by emerging artists from across the world. Following an international open call for works - which attracted 177 entries from 30 countries worldwide - 20 finalists were selected by an esteemed panel of judges including sound artists Janek Schaefer, Annie Mahtani and publisher of The Wire, Tony Herrington.

First prize was awarded to UK artist Laura Daly, for her sound installation Shadowland. A combination of sampled sounds from archived news footage, documentaries, interviews and propaganda films, Shadowland journeys from the years preceding the Khmer Rouge regime until after the Vietnamese occupation, and explores the significance of the Cambodian land in terms of oppression, war, genocide, nationalism, communism, capitalism and hope.

The winners were announced at a private viewing event in Morley Gallery, where all the finalists had their work displayed. Second prize went to Year in Review by George Cloke from the UK, with Autonomous Sense Object by Nolan Lem of the USA taking third prize.

As winner, Laura received a pair of Genelec 8010 monitors with carry case, and commenting on her win, she told us:

“To be selected as a finalist in The Engine Room and then awarded first prize for Shadowland was a great honour. The breadth and scope of work in the exhibition represents an exciting picture of what is happening internationally in sound art today. Receiving a pair of Genelec speakers as part of my prize allows me to hear incredibly precise audio during edits and playback. This is already making a strong contribution to the development of new works.”
