From Japan to Copacabana: Genelec powers balanced music experience at [111] Music Bar
Now, seeking to complement the experience of his other, more-established Copacabana restaurant, Haru, Rodrigues has set up a music bar inspired by the growing Japanese trend for blending dining with high-fidelity, curated music. Menandro, however, has taken the concept further, focussing on delivering a consistent listening experience throughout the entire venue.
Rethinking the traditional listening bar

Many Japanese-inspired listening bars rely on a traditional hi-fi approach, using a pair of large loudspeakers to cover the entire space. While visually striking, this configuration often results in uneven sound distribution, with guests sitting close to the loudspeaker pair experiencing significantly higher sound levels than those further away.
At [111], the goal is different – to ensure that every guest enjoys the same musical clarity and balance, no matter where they sit.
A distributed Genelec SAM™ solution
The bar's loudspeaker solution was developed with the help of Danny Dee, musical producer, Genelec user, resident DJ and curator at [111]. Danny proposed a distributed monitoring system using Genelec’s Smart Active Monitoring (SAM™) technology. Altogether, fourteen Genelec 8351B coaxial monitors are installed discreetly in the ceiling, while low-end support is provided by a powerful Genelec 7382 subwoofer.
The rectangular venue places its DJ booth centrally, with the subwoofer integrated into the booth. This central placement ensures evenly balanced low-frequency reinforcement throughout the whole space.
The bar itself is divided into three listening quadrants. Each quadrant features four 8351B monitors configured in a crossed left-right arrangement, taking inspiration from classic quadraphonic systems. Using Genelec’s GLM calibration software, the system has been carefully tuned so that every seating area enjoys a balanced and consistent listening experience.
Precision monitoring for the DJ

Two additional 8351B loudspeakers are oriented towards the DJ booth to provide accurate audio monitoring for the DJ, which helps them raise the entire experience. The wider technical design of [111] includes carefully planned electrical power distribution for both the DJ equipment and loudspeaker system – and a clever audio signal cabling infrastructure.
Stunning music without excessive volume
Unlike many nightlife venues, [111] prioritises musical clarity over sheer volume. Thanks to the bar's Genelec system, listening levels can remain moderate while customers enjoy a rich and engaging musical experience.
The result is a space where guests often find themselves quietly immersed in the music while they enjoy the bar’s carefully crafted cocktails. The drinks menu is as thoughtfully curated as the musical programme, and guests can also tuck into an attractive Japanese food menu, which is distinct from that of the sister restaurant, Haru.
While most listening happens at moderate levels, the Genelec system provides generous headroom, allowing the venue to host special events that require higher sound pressure levels, such as record label showcases.
A must-visit destination for music lovers

Since opening on 1 November 2025, [111] has already welcomed notable visitors, including guitarist Andy Summers, whose autographed guitar is proudly displayed in the venue.
For visitors to Rio de Janeiro, an evening at [111] has quickly become an essential experience – combining Japanese listening bar culture, exceptional cocktails and the clarity of Genelec sound, just moments away from the famous Copacabana beach.
