Genelec Helps Queen Celebrate ‘News Of The World’ Box Set Release

Released today, exactly 40 years after the original album, Queen’s News Of The World special box set includes the original album CD plus two additional CDs of recently unearthed out-takes and rarities from the band's archives, one of which is a newly created ‘alternative’ version of the whole album – Raw Sessions. The album, which is one of Queen's biggest selling records of all time, includes both Brian May’s We Will Rock You and Freddie Mercury's We Are The Champions, monumental stadium anthems which remain a staple of major sporting events all around the world to this day.
Genelec has had a very long and happy relationship with the band’s studio team, who have used Genelec monitors on many projects over the years, and we were thrilled when a 2.1 system consisting of a pair of 8260 three-way SAM monitors and a 7271 subwoofer were chosen as the audio playback system for the recent Raw Sessions listening event in central London.
Hosted by radio presenters Matt Everitt (left) and Bob Harris (right), the packed listening event allowed members of the UK music press to hear the entire Raw Sessions album, before Bob discussed his history with the band, and in particular his time spent with them in the studio and on the road in and around the time of the original News Of The World album release.
A Q&A then took place with Bob and the Queen studio team who worked on the 40th Anniversary box set: namely producer/engineers Justin Shirley-Smith, Joshua J Macrae and Kris Fredriksson.
Commenting on the choice of playback monitoring, Kris told us:
“There wasn't much setup time for this event, so it was a great feeling to be able to trust the power of the Genelec system to compensate for the room acoustics, and to know that we could deliver a true sound. Also, since The Raw Sessions album was mixed on Genelec speakers, it made sense to play it back on them too!”
The box set – which also includes a pure analogue re-cut of the original vinyl LP and a new one hour DVD documentary, is out now.
