As part of an ongoing trend of modernisation within the education industry, the University of Portsmouth recently embarked on a mission to transform its Faculty Teaching Centre into a modern, IP-based AV environment.

Integration specialist, Roche AV Pro, completed a comprehensive systems upgrade throughout the building, selecting Genelec’s Smart IP series to deliver consistent intelligibility and even coverage for a dynamic learning experience.

The university was in need of a flexible teaching space capable of adapting to the evolving needs of students and faculty as institutions increasingly embrace audio-visual technologies in their curriculum. A part of a wider AV upgrade, Roche AV Pro ensured that the Faculty Teaching Centre (FTC) featured intuitive control, detailed energy monitoring, and scalable options for future expansion.

To deliver high-fidelity, evenly distributed sound throughout the FTC, twenty Genelec 4435A in-ceiling Smart IP loudspeakers were installed across teaching zones and communal areas. Compact and unobtrusive, the white speakers provide clear coverage for spoken word announcements and presentations, while their discreet design allows them to blend seamlessly into the environment.

Working alongside Sennheiser TCC2 beamforming and lapel microphones, the loudspeakers handle both on-premises audio and streamed content, delivering consistent quality for lectures, videos, and interactive learning sessions. Powered via PoE over a single CAT cable, the Smart IP speakers simplify installation, reduce cabling, and support precise DSP-configured coverage.

Sustainability was a key driver of the facility upgrade. By combining energy-efficient design with single-cable PoE operation, the Genelec Smart IP loudspeakers minimise power consumption and infrastructure complexity, aligning perfectly with the university’s energy monitoring objectives.
Managed through Biamp DSPs, the system delivers mix-minus configurations, intelligent source routing, and seamless integration with the room control interface, providing a reliable and flexible audio environment.

By combining Genelec Smart IP loudspeakers with advanced DSP management, Roche AV Pro delivered an intelligent, energy-conscious audio solution seamlessly integrated into the university’s broader AV upgrade. Leveraging robust AV-over-IP delivery, precise audio processing, intuitive control, and device-level power monitoring, the system creates a sophisticated, resilient teaching environment that empowers students and educators as institutions increasingly adopt advanced AV technologies in their classrooms.
