Land of the Rising SAM™ - IMAGICA Opts for Genelec

Providing an array of production and post-production services ranging from motion pictures to television programmes and commercial editing, IMAGICA is one of the largest companies of its type in Japan, spanning seven locations.

Otaritec Corporation, Genelec’s authorised distributor in Japan, has installed two sets of Genelec Smart Active Monitor (SAM™) systems at two of IMAGICA’s Tokyo studios. As users of first generation SAM™ systems, they knew what to expect – compact, intelligent systems delivering crystal-clear neutral sound in challenging recording environments.

At IMAGICA Ogikubo Animation House in Tokyo, a pair of Genelec 8330As has been installed. The 8330A features Genelec MDE™ and DCW™ technologies, a flow optimised reflex port, high SPL and wide uncoloured response in a compact enclosure.

The high-resolution 8330A fed from DAW outputs enables the user to swiftly and precisely evaluate an edit or a mix, with its outstanding levels of sonic performance able to precisely convey detailed nuances of sound.

Studios with large monitor speakers are often planned with considerable finance, able to afford room acoustics treatment, but smaller room setups often face restrictions both in dimensions and budgets. It is in this scenario where Genelec Smart Active Monitor (SAM™) systems really excel.

SAM™ ensures all speakers optimise themselves by automatically aligning levels and timing while equalising any room response anomalies.

The second installation was in utility-1 in IMAGICA Tokyo Imaging Center in Gotanda, Tokyo. A total of five Genelec 8320As for LCR+Ls/Rs channels and one 7350A for low-frequency effects (LFE) channel have been installed to enable 5.1 surround sound monitoring. The 8320A SAM™ studio monitor is an advanced and flexible monitoring solution delivering outstanding acoustic performance in a compact footprint.

Although effective 5.1 monitoring requires precision in speaker position, balance and flight time adjustments, Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM™ 2.0) software allows the user to easily establish an ideal surround sound monitoring environment. GLM™ 2.0 can be used as a versatile monitor controller to perform instantaneous switching between 5.1 surround sound and 2-channel stereo operations as and when required.

Genelec AutoCal™ allows to automatically align every monitor on the network for level, timing and equalisation of room response anomalies.

“The Genelec SAM™ systems are an ideal fit for both studio spaces at IMAGICA, creating outstanding environments for sound monitoring in conditions where space is limited,” says Mika Mäkilaakso, Genelec Area Sales Manager.

“It is exciting that IMAGICA was delighted with previous SAM™ products and their neutral sound character, and has again chosen Genelec with our proven reputation to deliver unparalleled quality and performance.”
