Production and Supply Chain

Our sourcing, design and production processes include environmental and social criteria. We audit key suppliers against agreed standards and our Supplier Code of Conduct.

How we design our technology, source our materials and operate our factory plays a vital role in advancing sustainable development at Genelec. We approach this responsibility with dedication, care and full commitment to continuous improvement – backed by our management systems certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Design

Every Genelec solution starts with consideration for our customers – by identifying the challenges they face and designing ways to deliver them lasting value. Once we’ve identified the customer’s needs, the next phase is ensuring the design satisfies the regulations of both the Finnish government and the European Union (EU).

Environmental considerations are part of the design specification during R&D, and regular design reviews confirm that these are all met. We strive to analyse the environmental effects of our technology – from materials and manufacturing to energy use, servicing and recyclability – to support more sustainable design decisions. We take lifecycle considerations into account in our product development – supporting more sustainable choices throughout design, production, use, and eventual recycling.

By combining timeless aesthetics, high serviceability and carefully selected material choices, we aim to develop audio solutions that are designed for long-term technical use.

Sourcing

In the electronics industry, global supply chains are complex, involving multiple participants and companies, making it challenging to ensure complete transparency.

At Genelec, we aim to build strong relationships with our suppliers through clear communication and long-term cooperation.

We consider a range of factors when selecting partners, which also include environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations, as well as shared values. Whenever feasible, we prioritise suppliers located near our Iisalmi factory to reduce transport distances and support the local economy.

To assist this process, we audit our key suppliers to ensure that they meet agreed standards. To set clearer sustainability requirements for our suppliers, we created our Code of Conduct for Suppliers, which was published and implemented in 2023.

Location of Our Suppliers by Country

We aim to favour local suppliers whenever feasible, and many of our materials are sourced from within Finland or nearby regions. However, for certain specialised components, international sourcing is sometimes necessary. We continue to evaluate our supply chain with the goal of reducing transport distances and increasing transparency.

How We Operate as a Manufacturer

All of Genelec's core operations, from R&D to manufacturing and logistics, are based under one roof in Iisalmi, Finland. This helps to foster effective team collaboration, innovation, creativity and quality control – and allows us to provide fast and technically superior customer service.

We're located next to the idyllic Lake Porovesi in Iisalmi, Finland – a natural choice for a regional, family-owned company like Genelec. Since the beginning, we’ve taken great care to ensure that our operations do not negatively impact the surrounding nature.
Our factory, originally built in 1985, has since undergone five environmentally conscious expansions. Today, it runs on a mix of CO₂-free and partly renewable energy, including a total of 699 solar panels – the first 451 installed in 2019, and an additional 248 added in 2024.

As part of the Iisalmi community, we also see it as our responsibility to support the vitality and development of our local surroundings. We are committed to long-term, sustainable employment, close cooperation with local partners and schools, and helping to ensure that our region remains a thriving place for future generations. We’ve organised our factory to optimise resources, save energy, and prevent both material loss and waste. Through careful chemical management and use of advanced software, we also minimise our use of harmful substances.

Through adoption of the ISO 9001 quality management standard, we ensure our customers receive consistent, good-quality solutions and services. Additionally, the ISO 14001 standard gives both our customers and us the confidence of knowing our environmental impact is continually measured, managed and improved. Please see the section on ‘Awards and Certificates’ for more information.

Ethical Practices and Whistleblowing

We’ve implemented a Code of Conduct for Employees to ensure ethical behaviour across our operations. In line with EU directives, Genelec provides a whistleblowing channel for employees, customers, suppliers, or partners to confidentially report concerns about unethical behaviour.
