Tallinn Gets the Genelec Experience with New msonic Baltic Showroom / Retrosonic Studio
A new state-of-the-art recording facility is giving Estonian music producers and engineers the opportunity to experience Genelec active monitoring in a high-end studio setting. Based in one of the capital city of Tallinn’s most prestigious creative hubs, the Kultuurikatel, the studio is the brainchild of local Genelec partner msonic Baltic, whose Jürgen Urbanik has described it as “raising awareness of high quality products – we believe that high quality equipment helps artists to evolve”.
Having officially opened just three months ago, the msonic Baltic Showroom / Retrosonic Studio has already become a much valued asset for the local audio community, offering not only a showcase for the products found within, but also a place where local artists can record on a budget. Waiting for them is a set-up comprising of two 8351 coaxial three way monitors, two 8331 ultimate point source coaxials from The Ones range, and a 7360 subwoofer. Courtesy of Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM), the entire SAM compatible set-up can be quickly and can be easily configured to a 5.1 or 7.1 system with addition of one 8351 and two 8341 speakers. The separate producer room has a stationary set up as a stereo system comprising of two 8030 studios monitors and a 7050 subwoofer. This can be easily configured to a 5.1 system by including three more 8030 monitors.
“The studio functions as a Genelec experience centre for many of our studio customers,” explains Urbanik. “It allows us to demonstrate Genelec monitors in a real world environment that professionals both understand and respect. But we also rent it out at artist-friendly rates for mixing and recording sessions, and we frequently use it for education purposes. It’s an excellent location for training – we recently hosted a multi-channel audio workshop for the Baltic Film & Media School, for which we demonstrated a 7.1 system and the use of GLM and Smart Active Monitoring.”
Opening the facility up to the local community is in line with msonic Baltic’s broader philosophy. Launched in 2016 by Mikko Palomäki, a Finnish entrepreneur living in Estonia, the company describes its mission as “bringing quality, professional equipment to the mainstream”.
